Counter Balance redux
I just completed these commission pieces for a client I met at my show at Dunn Gardens in late October. She saw my previous Queen Anne paintings of the Counterbalance and asked if I could duplicate them.
For those who don't remember my post from 2014. These are the same view of Queen Anne Avenue as it ascends its namesake hill. To Seattle locals, this portion is called the Counterbalance. It’s an historic reference to early street car technology. Essentially to insure safer travel up and down the steep hill, a cable was hooked from a street car to a sixteen-ton weight positioned under the street (at the opposite end of the hill). The weight would “counterbalance” the street car as it went up and down the hill making it easier to pull up and brake going down. Sounds like a contraption right out of the Flintstones. My objective was to contrast the same view over 80 years apart.
They are each 16"x 20" acrylic on canvas.
