Downtown Portland from the Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade.
Playing with urban impressionism with this piece for Matthew.
Matthew wanted a downtown (P-town) city scene at night incorporating the river and a bridge or two. With so many angles and points to choose from I decided on the perspective just north of the Hawthorne Bridge near the statue of Vera Katz on the eastside esplanade named in her honor. Matthew is a new home owner.
His vintage 1920’s/30’s brick condo in the historic Hawthorne district
is nothing short of awesome both in its location and layout. It just happened to have a long empty
wall in need of some love - hence the commission. A long painting was best suited for this long
wall so I selected a 24”x 48” canvas for the job. I used bright colors (directly from the tube) and texture to
create energy. I applied multiple layers of acrylic paint with brush and
pallet knife to help bring the city to life.
At least that was my intention.
Vera Katz passed this away this week: Vera Her vision, energy and courage and years of service are an
inspiration to every Portlandian. She worked tirelessly to make
this city a better place for future generations. Matthew is that future generation - with a new home and some new art too.
BTW: Happy Birthday today - Matthew!
