Cabin Art: “Late Winter at Government Camp”
Creating desirable cabin art starts with a subject familiar
yet interesting to potential suitors. So
I chose the rest area parking lot at Government Camp. I know it’s not very sexy unless you’re a dog
looking to get out of the car. To them
every corner of this lot smells like an Indiana Jones adventure.
To most humans however, it’s just a parking
lot. Unless of course the sky is clear. When that happens, go to the west end
of the lot to see Mt Hood appear like a back drop on a movie set.
In the shadows of the late winter parking lot, Mt. Hood
seems to glow in the evening sunset . I wanted to capture Oregon’s iconic peak at precisely this moment and
maybe contrast forest against civilization too. Man against wilderness. Alright maybe too far on that one. Hopefully however my audience can feel a level of silence as a busy Sunday comes to a close,
To most people travelling to or from Central Oregon, Government
Camp is just a sign. To others it’s a day
trip play area on the cheap. Make no
mistake, Government Camp is an historic rustic village with unbelievable views,
places to stay and eat, and yes… a first rate brew pub.
So next time you go up US 26 to Government Camp, stop for a while. Take a look around. If you end up at the Mt. Hood Brewery, order
an Ice Axe and tell them Dave sent you. Actually
they won’t know what that means, so just order something. Anything actually.
This painting is not complete, but will be soon. It will have a custom frame painted (by me)
on recycled wood. It will actually be part
of the overall piece and painted in the spirit and expectations of traditional
cabin art.
31" x 24" Acrylic on board.
Dave, this is beautiful!
