Remembering 2013, Portlandia
Last summer a neighborhood friend, Susan Vogt, took a
picture at a Timbers game and posted it on Facebook. It immediately caught my eye. The field angles, the lines, the flags, the
crowd – it said everything one needed to know about a being at a Timbers game without
seeing a single player, ref or ball. I
asked Susan if I could use the shot for a painting and then thought about
how.
I finally figured out what to do after the Timbers beat the
Sounders, to advance to Western Conference Finals. Watching from home I could hear the noise and feel
the tension, the energy, the moment. Cheering,
chanting and flag waving kept going long after the game was over. What a party.
What a celebration. How different
this game is from traditional American sports. I wanted to capture some of that, so I thought
about Susan’s photo and then added other elements to enhance the storyline.

I hope you like it! Happy
Holidays!
I wish when we clicked on a picture that it would open up bigger so we could really get a good look.
