Monday. Inauguration Day and remembering "The King"
Dateline MLK Day 2013 – Inauguration Day and the day after yesterdays NFL Conference Title Games.
Washington DC was the center of activity today, so why not look back at this town 30 years ago. In January 1983, Washington DC was all about John "The Diesel" Riggins plowing for yards behind his offensive line affectionately named “The Hogs.” It was a time when assorted misguided men wore hideous dresses and pig snouts to RFK stadium to cheer their beloved Redskins. It was a unique month created by a strike shortened NFL season which gave birth to the only expanded Super Bowl "tournament.” Sixteen teams competed in a seeded bracketed playoff, which lasted exactly one month. Riggins gained 100 or more yards in four consecutive (post season) games. His 166 yards on 38 carries against the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII ended the month and gave the Washington Redskins their first Lombardi Trophy. After hearing President Reagan called with congratulations, MVP Riggins responded "At least for tonight Ron is President but I’m the king."
