Painting for a Greener America
Yes, I’m doing my part. Actually when Whole Foods catered an office lunch recently at my real world workplace – Yesmail Interactive, they left behind a couple of small 16”x 11.5” boxes. They said to recycle them. So I did. I painted the Hollywood Theater, twice. Why not? I thought it would be cool to depict complimentary scenes of the Northeast Portland landmark from the perspective of both yesterday and today.
The Hollywood Theater on Northeast Sandy Blvd opened in 1926 and originally featured silent films and vaudeville shows. It was the golden era for movie houses. In fact this palace-like structure was so prominent that the surrounding area/neighborhood became known as “The Hollywood District.” There has a been a great local revival for this historical landmark and today the Hollywood Theater is home to both major films and independent films alike.

These two small paintings on recylced catering boxes are intended to capture the spirit and the history of Portland's Hollywood Theater. If I can contribute a small part in making America greener – that is a good thing too.
